Eddy Pineiro drilled a 35-yard field goal as time expired to lift the San Francisco 49ers to a 16-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon in Santa Clara, Calif.
Christian McCaffrey combined for 140 yards from scrimmage and made a key reception to set up the game-winning field goal for San Francisco (3-0). Mac Jones completed 27 of 41 passes for 284 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Kyler Murray completed 22 of 35 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown for Arizona (2-1). Trey McBride had a team-high five catches for 43 yards and a score.
The score was even at 13-all with 8:37 to go in the fourth quarter after McBride hauled in a 1-yard scoring pass from Murray.
The Cardinals took a 15-13 lead with 3:15 remaining. Calais Campbell applied pressure on Jones and drew a holding call on the 49ers in the end zone that resulted in a safety.
San Francisco finished the scoring with a 10-play, 63-yard drive that ended with Pineiro's winning field goal. Moments before the kick, McCaffrey caught a short pass from Jones and turned it into a 20-yard gain to put the 49ers in easy field-goal position.
Cardinals running back James Conner was carted off the field with a right ankle injury early in the second half. Conner, who signed a two-year contract extension during the offseason, was surrounded by players from both teams as medical staff attended to him on the field.
After both teams went scoreless in the first quarter, Arizona grabbed a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. Chad Ryland made a 34-yard kick for the Cardinals with 8:45 left in the half.
The 49ers pulled even at 3-all with 4:22 remaining in the half as Pineiro made a 38-yarder.
Pineiro struck again, this time from 51 yards, to put San Francisco on top 6-3 with 17 seconds remaining in the half.
Arizona evened the score at 6-all on Ryland's 28-yard field goal with 6:37 left in the third quarter.
Kyle Juszczyk caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Jones to put the 49ers on top 13-6 with 10:50 left in the game.
